From the Executive Headteacher, Jon Chaloner
Welcome to the website for Glyn School.
Glyn School is a local comprehensive school that has rapidly improved over the last five years. Rated as an ‘outstanding’ school by Ofsted in 2009, Glyn underwent a further Ofsted Subject Inspection in Modern Foreign Languages in March 2011 and was once more deemed ‘outstanding’. In addition, the School achieved the same outcome for its Special Educational Needs Review by the local authority in March 2011. Our examination results, our sporting success and our music and dramatic achievements are evidence that learning flourishes under the guidance of energetic, talented, caring and committed staff. We hold Technology and Training School status and use these accolades to support colleagues in other schools both locally and further afield.
Our mission statement – launched in September 2008 - encapsulates what we stand for: “Glyn’s mission is to inspire a love of learning and achievement that is founded on the virtues of integrity, respect and a desire to succeed. Every person is highly valued and expected to achieve their potential, through academic challenge, sporting endeavour and technological innovation.” The mission statement reflects the values of Glyn as it strives to serve its community as successfully as possible, ‘preserving the best, improving the rest’.
We have extremely high expectations of all our students and this is reflected in their examination results, in terms of both attainment and achievement, which have improved markedly since 2007. Our results show that Glyn students attend one of the best performing schools within Surrey. Our last set of validated results show that the percentage of students achieving at least five GCSEs between A* and C, including English and Mathematics, was bettered by only two of the remaining 52 secondary schools in the local authority. We are pleased that our students are achieving their impressive results through a traditional GCSE-based curriculum. The overwhelming majority of boys continue their academic success to the end of Year 13, alongside our female students who have helped establish Glyn Sixth Form’s ‘outstanding’ provision in the local area.
We strive to find new and innovative ways to extend and enrich our curriculum and the students’ learning experience. At Glyn, we aim for our students to growing into independent learners who are able to contribute to, and benefit from, the society in which they live. As we continue to prosper, we hold on to the essence of Glyn in order for our students to fulfil their potential. We are excited by the opportunities National Support School status gives, having achieved this accreditation in January 2010.
On 1 April 2011, Glyn School converted to academy status; the natural progression from the foundation status that the school had held since 1999. Glyn School continues to work for the best possible facilities and outcomes for its students and work with our partner schools and the local authority. Since October 2010, Glyn has provided leadership for Danetree Junior School in West Ewell. The agreement between both governing bodies and the local authority is that, until August 2012, I am responsible for the performance and strategic development of both Glyn and Danetree. Whilst I retain my overall headteacher responsibility for Glyn, Mr Mayhew is ‘Associate Headteacher’ supporting me in the running of both schools. Ms Bailey is ‘Deputy Headteacher’ at Glyn and Miss Newton is the ‘Head of School’ at Danetree.
Glyn is a successful school and aspires to sustain this into the future. ‘Outstanding’ does not equate to ‘perfection’ but we aspire to become an exceptional school, with the students at the centre of our work.
Max Crawford: Headboy
Glyn is for everyone. Whether you are the fastest on the track, the most able in the maths class or even a future Oscar winner, our school offers all students the opportunity to participate and shine.
I am a footballer and very keen on sport, but during my time here I have performed in music events, drama productions and even the school Spelling Bee competition! I think the main reason why my time at Glyn is going so quickly and enjoyably, is because of the range of activities, events and trips that the school has allowed me to take part in.
At all times the staff are encouraging, friendly and supportive, going the extra mile to ensure that students reach and exceed their potential. This ‘over-and-above’ attitude is absorbed by the students and reflected in our consistently exceptional exam results.
Glyn is not rated as an outstanding school by OfSTED for nothing, and I am very proud to be part of it.
Emma Bullock: Headgirl
From the moment I joined Glyn, I have been overwhelmed by the amount of enthusiasm and effort put into the school’s community. Glyn offers a huge range of extra curriculum activities, suitable for every student and there is never a moment when a student would feel that they have nothing to contribute.
Coming into a majority male environment initially may seem daunting for Glyn’s female students, but it was a pleasant surprise to see how welcoming and helpful the school was, allowing everyone to settle in instantly. The staff at Glyn ensure that they present their students with motivating and interactive lessons, as well as providing extra support around exam times. From my experience, I feel that students at Glyn are encouraged to challenge their abilities and strive to reach above their target grades and there is nothing more satisfying than exceeding your teachers’ and your own expectations!
Personally, I can say with confidence that any student considering Glyn as an option would not be dissatisfied with what the school can offer. There is an ideal balance of social and educational aspects, allowing students to mature and develop throughout their years at Glyn.
